How Do You Know If It Is Organic?

downloadOrganic food is becoming more and more popular these days, and as a result, there are a lot of companies out there using greenwashing to sell food. Greenwashing is when a company makes it seem like something is good for you and the environment when that is not the case. An example of this is when you pick up food that says it is “Natural” but contains processed ingredients. Even some foods will say they are organic when that is not the case. So, how do you know if something is organic or not?

There are several ways, here is how:

  • If you are picking up loose fruits and vegetables, look at the Price Look Up sticker. If the produce is organic, it will begin with 9 and have five digits, while non-organic produce will have only four digits. If you pick up something that has a five-digit PLU that begins with 8, that means that it has been genetically modified.
  • Another great way to know if something is organic is to look for the USDA Organic sticker. This sticker certifies that it has pass the test of any one of the 50 USDA-accredited certified agents to be organic, and that at least 95 per cent of its ingredients are organic. Water and salt are not included in that percentage.
  • If something says it has been “Made with Organic Ingredients“, that means that it has been found to use 70 per cent of organically-produced ingredients, while the remaining 30 per cent of ingredients are not organic. These foods are still better than processed foods, but they don’t carry the USDA organic seal. Companies follow these rules because there are heavy fines in place for saying something is organic when it is not. Fines can be as high as $11,000 per violation.
  • If you are buying your food from farmer’s markets, chances are there will be no seals to say something is organic. If someone says their produce is certified organic, you need to ask them to see the organic paperwork because they have to be certified by the USDA’s National Organic Program, which requires farmers to market their products as organic if they pass the criteria. It should be noted that some farmers use organic methods but don’t go through the certification process. Anyone earning less than $5,000 a year selling at booths do not need to get certified.

Organic Kosher

imagesEating kosher is very important to people of the Jewish faith. It is central to their belief. Just because they need their food prepared in a certain way, that doesn’t mean they should be going without food that is organic. No different than everyone else, they deserve to have the option of organic. So, where can one get organic kosher?

The laws regarding kosher slaughter are so strong that the USDA has exempted kosher butchers and slaughterhouses from regulations, so you already know you are getting good quality food. Of course, that doesn’t mean you are getting organic food. Under kosher law, kosher food must be prepared in accordance with Jewish dietary laws. Foods that are not kosher include any shellfish, reptile, birds such as eagles and owls, and mammals such as pigs and rabbits. For other species, the meat must be slaughtered in a certain manner to be considered kosher, often under supervision of a rabbi. In addition, meat and dairy products cannot be consumed at the same time. Any kosher food that is prepared with, or from, non-kosher food is no longer considered to be kosher.

As foods have become more complex, with more ingredients and more processing, more and more kosher foods have kosher labelling. Kosher is also not just for Jewish people, but Muslims as well. Roughly 16 per cent of the $100 billion spent in the United States on kosher food comes from Muslim individuals.

Kosher food has more supervision than other foods, so many see it as an alternative to unhealthy processed foods.

Where does organic kosher come in then? Well, organic kosher is the same as regular kosher food in that it has to follow the same rules and regulations that are seen with other organic food. The only difference is that it is kosher. Although, given the large guidelines in place, it could be said that kosher food is more organic than many other “organic” brands out there. If you are concerned about what you are eating and want a healthier option, then you may want to consider eating kosher. You don’t have to be Jewish to eat kosher, and organic kosher is probably the cleanest food out there.

Give it a try.

Why Real Food Diets Are The Best

downloadWe all know that real food is the best food. When people go on a real food diet, they report feeling healthier, happier and better overall. There are many diets out there, and many may think that the real food diet is just another type of diet. Well, science has looked at every diet and the winner overall is real food.

Annual Reviews, a science publication, asked Dr. David Katz, the practising physician and researcher of Yale University’s Prevention Research Centre, to compare the medical evidence for and against every mainstream diet.

In the study, along with his colleague Stephanie Meller, he looked at the major diets of the day including low carb, vegan, Paleolithic, low fat, Mediterranean and more. Through the work, they found that the best diets were ones that focused mostly on plants, and were close to nature. These were the diets that focused on health promotion and disease prevention. The diets that did the best included fruits and vegetables, as well as whole grains, nuts and seeds.

As Dr. Katz stated, it doesn’t help to pick the most nutritious bread or pasta sauce. He goes on to say that you need to eat food direct from nature. By eating foods close to nature, or real foods, you end up not having to worry about trans fat or saturated fat or salt. Most salt comes from processed food, not people adding salt. He states that if you focus on real food, nutrients will take care of themselves.

This is why real food is so good for you. You are eating food that is not processed, that is healthy and close to nature. You are getting the nutrients and ingredients your body needs, and you are ensuring that you life will be a healthy one. By eliminating the harmful chemicals, trans fats, salt and more from your diet, your weight will go down, your body will feel healthy and you can remove 80 per cent of the risk of chronic illnesses in your life.
