Conflicted on Culinary Cooking Oils? Here’s Help On How To Choose

Have you recently been standing in aisle 3 of your local grocery store in need of cooking oil, planning to make a quick pick and instead find yourself completely overwhelmed? When it comes to choosing the right culinary cooking oil, it might be hard to decide where to start. While the internet is flooded with often contradictory information about cooking oils—bogus health claims and cooking myths, just to name a few—it’s best to compile reliable information and understand how the oils are processed and which is best for your particular cooking style.

We sat with Yehudith Girshbeg, CEO of De La Rosa Real Foods & Vineyards, who shared, “Consumers are being persuaded by mass-marketing to believe that some popular, widely used oils like canola, corn, and soybean are “healthy.” But once educated on how these oils are made, it’s clear they are totally unhealthy and overprocessed.”

For more than 30 years, De La Rosa Real Foods & Vineyards has been committed to helping consumers make healthier food choices by providing products that are non-GMO, gluten-free, vegan, kosher (many Kosher for Passover) and organic whenever possible.  This specialty food manufacturer is also committed to providing education to consumers as to what is healthy and what’s not. De La Rosa offers a large assortment of healthy oils, vinegars and wine.

In fact, not all oils are created equally. Many of the oils we use today in the kitchen are made from seeds. In order to get the oil from these tiny seeds, they can either be mechanically or chemically processed. These processes are known as solvent extracted, expeller pressed or cold pressed. Most solvent extracted oils go through an enormous amount of processing with chemical solvents, steamers, neutralizers, de-waxers, bleach and deodorizers. The “solvent” most often used to extract the oil is the neurotoxin hexane, and it’s been shown that some of this toxic chemical residue can remain in the oil despite the refining process. By using culinary oils that don’t explicitly label the process, consumers could very well be eating solvent-extracted oils.

Expeller pressing and cold pressing use no toxins during the mechanical process of extraction. This traditional way of making oil is significantly healthier than using hexane, however less oil is made and the process is more expensive. Which is why manufacturers continue to produce the less expensive, solvent extracted, overly processed, flavorless cooking oils like canola, corn, soybean or cottonseed that continue to be mass-marketed with flimsy nutrient claims and misleading label lingo.

Thankfully not all manufacturers are created equal, either. “We are what we eat, so what we eat matters. For our products, such as our De La Rosa Grape Seed Oils, we are dedicated to a pure production process. We work on the formulations of all of our products to make them as healthy as possible, always using the fewest ingredients and eliminating anything that we feel is potentially harmful. This is why consumers can find De La Rosa expeller pressed Grape Seed Oil clearly labeled hexane free,” says De La Rosa CEO Yehudith Girshberg.

Educating yourself about the quality control of your culinary oil product is essential. Girshberg explains, “How an oil is produced isn’t always clearly marked so choosing culinary oils that document and label their products is the best way to ensure chemical free and high quality. Keep it simple, less is more.”

Products that maintain the highest possible level of flavor, aroma, color and nutritional richness should always be the goal. Keep your eye out for features on retail packaging– compare labels, compare prices and most importantly compare the taste. While your go-to cooking oil choice will probably be based on a variety of factors, keeping in mind how the oil is processed is one of the easiest ways to make a healthy decision that will benefit you and your loved ones for years to come.

Juicing Organic Fruits and Veggies

There are many ways to get healthy, but few ways are as good as juicing. When you are juicing, you are taking raw vegetables and fruits and you are putting them through a juicer. Instead of buying juice, which is full of items you don’t want, the juicer will take all the liquid out of the fruit and put it in your drink.

There are many reasons why this is a good thing, not the least of which is the fact that you are getting all the vitamins and minerals from those juices, and nothing is compromised. Only what you put into the juicer is what you drink. There are no extra chemicals or by-products that you should worry about.

As such, it is very important that when you are juicing, you are only using fruits that come from an organic source. Organic fruits will not have any of the pesticides that you have to worry about, and that will ensure that what you are drinking is only healthy vitamins and minerals.

The great thing about juicing is that it takes no time at all. Just select your favourite fruits like pineapples, berries, apples, oranges and watermelons, and put them in the juicer. In just 60 seconds, you can have a glass of juice that is full of everything you need. Nothing is compromised.

There are many juicers on the market, but you want one that is going to work for you. Juicers come in slow and fast speeds. The slow speed juicers have less oxidization, while the fast juicers have more oxidization and can’t be stored long. As well, slow juicers get more of the juicer out of the fruit, but the have a tougher time with hard fruits. Fast juicers get less juice out of the fruit by they can handle harder fruits.

Tahini Tips

imagesWhen you are looking to cook a good Tahini meal, you want to get the most out of the tahini. For one, it is a fantastic product that can do a lot of good for your body, thanks to the high protein and many other beneficial minerals and vitamins found inside.

If you want to get the most out of the tahini though, try these smart tips.

  1. Tahini is often used as part of a sauce, so why not use it as a salad dressing. Of everything tahini is used for, this is probably the most common. Take a few spoonfuls of tahini and mix it with the salad to create a taste that is creamy and rich, without being overpowering to what you are eating.
  2. Tahini also makes a great dip. Tahini, after all, is a big ingredient in hummus, but you can certainly make it a dip of its own. If you want, mix it with some sour cream and use pita chips to dip into it. This is a great way to really enjoy tahini.
  3. A lot of people like to mix yogurt into their smoothie or into their granola. You can do them one better by mixing in tahini. Tahini works great in granola, especially because it is already a nut butter, so you are really complimenting things. In smoothies, you can add it in and get a great shot of protein, and a healthy dose of several other vitamins, in an already healthy smoothie.
  4. Lastly, you can put tahini into brownies and cookies. Tahini can take the taste of a desert and bump it up to the next level. Tahini offers a sweet, earthy flavour to deserts, so it is really something you should try.

Tahini is a very healthy, natural product that has been used in the Middle East for centuries as a dressing and paste. Now you can discover how good it is too.

Know What You Buy

downloadWhen you go to the grocery store, it can be very easy to just buy what you think you will enjoy, without looking at the ingredients. Often, you choose what will taste good, even if it is bad for you. Our brains are wired for immediate gratification and we get more of an immediate gratification from eating something like chocolate chip cookies instead of an organic pear. It can be hard to fight this, but it is important that we choose not to eat food that is bad for us, and bad for the environment.

Processed foods taste great, but have you looked at the ingredients? They are not exactly made for consumption. Here is a tip, if you can’t pronounce what the ingredient is, you probably shouldn’t be ingesting it. Yes, it tastes great, but there is a huge amount of bad stuff in it that can really harm your body over the course of time.

You need to have the willpower to choose good real food that is organic. Real food is food that is just that, real. It is food you can eat right off the tree, without having to mix anything with it. It is organic, and it is good for you and good for the environment. The world is going through an obesity epidemic right now, and a big part of that is the processed food we keep putting into our bodies. Those processed foods stay with our body, in our fatty tissue, slowly harming us. Sure, sometimes eating a Twinkie tastes much better than eating a plum, but in the long run, the plum is going to do you a lot more good than if you are eating the Twinkie. Ya, you can have bad food on occasion, but your diet should be good food, that is organic. You need to know what you are buying, and what you are eating. It can do a lot to help you lose weight and feel healthier for many years to come.

Health Benefits of Organic Food

download (4)We have talked a lot about organic foods lately. Well, there is a reason for that. Organic foods are very good for you and for your life. Organic is literally the best thing you can do with your eating habits because you are preventing those pesticides from getting into your body and causing havoc with your body. Organic does the exact opposite. There are many things that organic can do for you and your health.

Here are just some of the health benefits of organic food.

Organic tomatoes are very healthy for you. In a study that went on for 10 years at the University of California, it was found that organic tomatoes are produced in an environment that has a much lower supply of nutrients because there are no chemical fertilizers being used. This is actually a very good thing because it causes an excessive amount of antioxidants, about 97 per cent more, to be produced. Anti-oxidants can help deal with cancer and even prevent it.

Speaking of anti-oxidants, there have been a number of studies that have found that organic foods have higher levels of anti-oxidants. The lack of foreign chemicals in the fruit and vegetables don’t allow for the negative aspects of the chemicals to remove the anti-oxidants.

Pesticides have allowed for higher crop yields because of the removal of pests, but those pesticides also use things like organophosphorus, which is a powerful chemical and it is not needed by our bodies, yet 80 per cent of that material in our body comes from pesticide-ridden fruits and vegetables.

Organic food has been found to be healthier for the heart as well. For animals that graze on grass, if they eat more grass they increase the levels of conugated linoleic acid in their bodies. This is very good for the cardiovascular system when we eat it. It is found in high amounts among animals that are raised in free-range and cage-free environments.

Lastly. organic foods are also believed to help us with our immune system and antibiotic resistance because of the higher levels of natural compounds found int he fruits and vegetables that are organic, rather than made with chemicals.

Change Your Life With Proper Food

downloadThe world we live in is a world where there is a lot of packaged and processed food that is not good for us in the least. It is a world where we are eating foods that are not natural, full of chemicals that are doing us more harm than good. It is a world where eating natural seems to have faded for the sake of convenience.

This is the wrong way to go. In order to be healthy, you need to forget about eating processed foods, and instead move to a diet that is more natural, and more real. There is the real food diet, which involve eating only real food. While it may seem odd to say real food as a thing, but we don’t eat real food when we eat fast food or processed food. You are eating food made to taste a certain way. Real food is food that includes fruits, vegetables, and foods that are good for you, coming straight from the Earth essentially. Then there are organic foods. Organic foods are foods that are made in such a way that there are no preservatives being consumed, no chemicals, no pesticides. These foods are foods that are made to be healthy for you and for the environment. The organic way is an excellent way to eat because it keeps harmful chemicals from getting into your body, but it also keeps harmful chemicals from being put into the environment. Algae dead zones are caused by pesticide use and putting harmful chemicals into river because of the runoff from agriculture. Organic prevents that from happening.

By eating organic and by eating real foods, you are helping keep your body healthy. you are helping to keep your family healthy and your environment healthy. it is one of the best things that you can do, and that includes getting rid of the need for processed foods that are doing you no good, and most likely only causing you harm in the long-run.

Forget processed, begin with real, organic food today.

Organic Kosher

imagesEating kosher is very important to people of the Jewish faith. It is central to their belief. Just because they need their food prepared in a certain way, that doesn’t mean they should be going without food that is organic. No different than everyone else, they deserve to have the option of organic. So, where can one get organic kosher?

The laws regarding kosher slaughter are so strong that the USDA has exempted kosher butchers and slaughterhouses from regulations, so you already know you are getting good quality food. Of course, that doesn’t mean you are getting organic food. Under kosher law, kosher food must be prepared in accordance with Jewish dietary laws. Foods that are not kosher include any shellfish, reptile, birds such as eagles and owls, and mammals such as pigs and rabbits. For other species, the meat must be slaughtered in a certain manner to be considered kosher, often under supervision of a rabbi. In addition, meat and dairy products cannot be consumed at the same time. Any kosher food that is prepared with, or from, non-kosher food is no longer considered to be kosher.

As foods have become more complex, with more ingredients and more processing, more and more kosher foods have kosher labelling. Kosher is also not just for Jewish people, but Muslims as well. Roughly 16 per cent of the $100 billion spent in the United States on kosher food comes from Muslim individuals.

Kosher food has more supervision than other foods, so many see it as an alternative to unhealthy processed foods.

Where does organic kosher come in then? Well, organic kosher is the same as regular kosher food in that it has to follow the same rules and regulations that are seen with other organic food. The only difference is that it is kosher. Although, given the large guidelines in place, it could be said that kosher food is more organic than many other “organic” brands out there. If you are concerned about what you are eating and want a healthier option, then you may want to consider eating kosher. You don’t have to be Jewish to eat kosher, and organic kosher is probably the cleanest food out there.

Give it a try.

Why Real Food Diets Are The Best

downloadWe all know that real food is the best food. When people go on a real food diet, they report feeling healthier, happier and better overall. There are many diets out there, and many may think that the real food diet is just another type of diet. Well, science has looked at every diet and the winner overall is real food.

Annual Reviews, a science publication, asked Dr. David Katz, the practising physician and researcher of Yale University’s Prevention Research Centre, to compare the medical evidence for and against every mainstream diet.

In the study, along with his colleague Stephanie Meller, he looked at the major diets of the day including low carb, vegan, Paleolithic, low fat, Mediterranean and more. Through the work, they found that the best diets were ones that focused mostly on plants, and were close to nature. These were the diets that focused on health promotion and disease prevention. The diets that did the best included fruits and vegetables, as well as whole grains, nuts and seeds.

As Dr. Katz stated, it doesn’t help to pick the most nutritious bread or pasta sauce. He goes on to say that you need to eat food direct from nature. By eating foods close to nature, or real foods, you end up not having to worry about trans fat or saturated fat or salt. Most salt comes from processed food, not people adding salt. He states that if you focus on real food, nutrients will take care of themselves.

This is why real food is so good for you. You are eating food that is not processed, that is healthy and close to nature. You are getting the nutrients and ingredients your body needs, and you are ensuring that you life will be a healthy one. By eliminating the harmful chemicals, trans fats, salt and more from your diet, your weight will go down, your body will feel healthy and you can remove 80 per cent of the risk of chronic illnesses in your life.
